Defibrillator Pads: Types, Uses, and Importance in Emergency Care


Defibrillator pads are one of the most critical components of a defibrillation system used in life-saving emergency care. These adhesive pads are designed to deliver an electrical shock from an automated external defibrillator (AED) or manual defibrillator to a patient experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Their proper use significantly increases survival rates by restoring a normal heart rhythm within minutes of cardiac failure.


What Are Defibrillator Pads?


Defibrillator pads, also known as electrode pads, are disposable adhesive patches placed directly on a patient’s chest during cardiac emergencies. They are connected to a defibrillator device, which analyzes the heart rhythm and determines whether a shock is needed. The pads act as a medium to transmit the electrical impulse safely and effectively into the heart muscle.


Modern pads are designed for ease of use, allowing even untrained bystanders to assist during emergencies when using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Most AED systems provide voice instructions that guide users step-by-step.


Types of Defibrillator Pads


There are mainly two types of defibrillator pads used in medical and emergency settings:


1. Adult Defibrillator Pads


These are standard pads used for adults and children over a certain weight or age threshold. They deliver a higher energy level suitable for adult cardiac physiology.


2. Pediatric Defibrillator Pads


Pediatric pads are specifically designed for infants and young children. They deliver a reduced energy dose to ensure safety. In many cases, they are placed in an anterior-posterior position (front and back of the chest) to improve shock effectiveness in smaller bodies.


Some defibrillator systems automatically adjust energy levels, but pad selection remains essential for safe treatment.


How Defibrillator Pads Work


Defibrillator pads contain conductive gel that improves electrical contact between the skin and the device. When attached to the chest, they allow the defibrillator to analyze heart rhythm and determine if ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia is present.


If a shockable rhythm is detected, the device charges and sends a controlled electrical pulse through the pads. This shock temporarily stops the heart, allowing it to reset and potentially resume a normal rhythm.


Proper Placement of Defibrillator Pads


Correct placement is essential for effective defibrillation. The most common placement is:


One pad placed on the upper right side of the chest, below the collarbone

The second pad placed on the lower left side of the chest, along the ribcage


This positioning ensures the electrical current passes through the heart efficiently.


In some special cases, such as pediatric use or trauma situations, alternative placements may be recommended.


Importance in Emergency Response


Defibrillator pads play a vital role in improving survival chances during sudden cardiac arrest. Immediate defibrillation within the first few minutes can increase survival rates significantly. This is why AEDs are commonly installed in public places such as airports, schools, gyms, and offices.
